PHOTO KNOW-HOW
Passport & ID photo guides
Use these guides as a starting point. A correct width and height do not automatically make a photo compliant: background, face size, expression, image recency, file size and application channel can matter too.
Before you submit: verify the current rules with the issuing authority or the consulate handling your application. Presets on this website are not official endorsements and cannot guarantee acceptance.
Common photo dimensions
- United States passport: commonly 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm) for printed photos. Digital upload requirements may differ.
- United Kingdom passport: printed photos commonly use 35 × 45 mm; online submissions have separate digital criteria.
- Pakistan CNIC / passport: requirements depend on the document and process. Confirm the current NADRA or passport authority instructions before relying on any general size.
- Schengen visa: 35 × 45 mm is commonly requested, but check the consulate and visa application instructions for your case.
- China passport: 33 × 48 mm is a commonly listed size; confirm current rules and any digital specifications.
- Canada passport: printed photos commonly use 50 × 70 mm and have specific head-size requirements.
How to take a better ID photo
- Face the camera directly with your head straight and eyes visible.
- Use even light and avoid harsh shadows on your face or background.
- Choose a plain background that matches the issuing authority’s rules.
- Keep a neutral expression unless the official instructions say otherwise.
- Use a recent, unaltered photo and avoid filters or beauty effects.
- Check the official head-height, eye-position and file-size rules before uploading.
What this tool does — and does not do
SnapID Studio crops and resizes an image to a selected dimension inside your browser. It does not verify identity, certify biometric compliance, or guarantee approval. This starter version does not automatically detect facial landmarks or replace backgrounds.
